Welcome to Dongshan, a historic and vibrant coffee-growing region in southern Taiwan — widely known as the birthplace of Taiwanese coffee. With its rich heritage, high-altitude microclimates, and passionate growers, Dongshan offers a unique coffee experience deeply rooted in the land and culture.
A Legacy of Cultivation
Dongshan’s relationship with coffee began during the Japanese colonial era, when the region’s mountainous terrain and temperate climate were first recognised for their coffee-growing potential. Today, the tradition continues along Highway 175, affectionately known as the "Dongshan Coffee Road." Located at around 700 meters above sea level, this route winds through a patchwork of family farms and roasters, offering scenic views and aromatic pit stops along the way.
Village Chief’s Manor Coffee
At the heart of Dongshan lies Village Chief’s Manor Coffee, a farm located at 900 meters elevation in the Liziyuan Tribal area. Enveloped by mountains on three sides and facing the expansive Jianan Plain, this plateau enjoys a mild climate averaging 20–28°C year-round — ideal for producing high-quality Arabica beans with bright acidity and rich aroma.
Originally built to host guests and visiting officials, the coffee garden soon became a center for local agricultural revival. Under the leadership of the village head, the farm formed the first organised group of Dongshan coffee growers and began a journey toward sustainable and community-focused development.
Ecology and Elevation
Adjacent to forest conservation areas at 800 meters, the Village Chief Coffee Ecological Park offers a sanctuary for both biodiversity and bean cultivation. The pristine environment, clean air, and fertile soil contribute to complex, layered cup profiles — making Dongshan coffee stand out for its clarity, sweetness, and floral character.
From Remote Plateau to Rural Renaissance
Through relentless advocacy and community organisation, Dongshan’s coffee pioneers have turned a once-remote farming village into a thriving eco-leisure destination. Their mission: to use coffee as a bridge between tradition and innovation, agriculture and tourism — improving rural livelihoods while preserving the region’s natural beauty.
At DOU Taiwan Coffee, we proudly feature Dongshan beans as a testament to Taiwan’s evolving coffee story — a story of resilience, revival, and remarkable flavour.
